Composite decks

Capped composite boards combine wood fibre and plastic under a protective shell. They don't need staining, don't splinter and carry long manufacturer warranties, which is why they've become the default upgrade on new decks around the Lower Mainland. They cost more upfront and save on upkeep over time.

The boards will outlast the frame, unless you protect it

Capped composite shrugs off rain, but the pressure-treated joists under it don't. Water that sits on the tops of joists under the boards is what usually ends a composite deck's life early.

Ask your builder about joist tape, joist spacing for the product you choose (many need 12 in on centre on stairs and angled layouts), and enough ventilation under low decks. A wash in spring and fall keeps shaded decks from going green.

Questions

Composite decking questions

Does composite decking get mouldy?

The boards themselves resist rot, but dirt and pollen can grow mould and mildew on the surface in shady, damp spots. A wash in spring and fall usually takes care of it.

Can composite go on my old deck frame?

Sometimes, if the frame is sound and the joist spacing suits the product. Many composite boards need joists at 16 in on centre or closer, and 12 in on stairs and angled layouts.
