What the rules say

Abbotsford's deck permit rules

Abbotsford's Building Bylaw, 2018 lists 'a Sundeck, the enclosure of an area above or below an existing Sundeck' among work requiring a building permit, and defines a sundeck as an unenclosed structure connected to and partially supported by a dwelling. Its definition of 'Structure' 'excludes landscaping, fences, and freestanding decks less than 0.6 m in height with no roof.'

Covered decks and roofs

The 0.6 m exclusion applies only to freestanding decks 'with no roof', and enclosing the area above or below an existing sundeck needs a permit. The City's residential addition drawing checklist (April 2023) asks for roof framing, roof finish, ceiling heights and protected soffit details for covered decks.

Other local rules worth knowing

The bylaw's exemption for exterior replacement work on single-family dwellings does not extend to sundeck work. Deck additions are applied for under the New Builds & Additions category, and drawings must show zoning setbacks and guard locations and heights.
