What the rules say
West Vancouver's deck permit rules
No deck-specific permit rule was found on the District of West Vancouver's site. Building Bylaw No. 5340 (effective June 23, 2025) requires a permit to construct, repair or alter a building or structure, and its exemptions (fences, accessory buildings under 10 m², trellises, arbours and landscaping, retaining walls under 1.2 m) do not include decks.
Covered decks and roofs
The District's zoning guide counts covered deck, patio and walkway areas toward site coverage, along with 'Steps, Decks, Patios or other structures more than 0.6 m (2 ft.) above grade'; only uncovered decks less than 0.6 m above finished grade are excluded.
Other local rules worth knowing
Per the zoning guide, 'Landings and decks that are part of the building and over 0.6 m above ground cannot project into required yard areas.' Planning submissions need cross-section details for decks over living space.
